Infant Massage and Preemie Brain Development

Among the often-heard benefits of infant massage is its special benefits for preterm infants. But what does the research say about infant massage for preemies? For the first time, body massage has been shown to affect brain development in human infants, and tactile stimulation has been shown to influence visual development in these babies. A study published in the May 2009 Journal of Neuroscience finds that massage accelerates brain development and the maturation of visual functioning in preterm babies. The research team, working with a cohort of preterm Italian infants with a gestational age between 30 and 33 weeks, found that EEG maturation, as well as visual system development, was accelerated in the massaged infants, compared to their non-massaged control group. Larger studies will be needed to replicate these findings.

Study Examines Effects of Domperidone on Composition of Breastmilk

A study published in the January edition of the journal Pediatrics examines the effect of domperidone on the nutrient composition of breast milk. Domperidone is a drug that is often prescribed to improve breast milk volume, but there is a lack of evidence on its effects on milk composition. The study authors examined a group of mothers who had experienced lactation failure and who had delivered infants at less than 31 weeks gestation. Mothers were randomly assigned to receive domperidone or a placebo for 14 days. Protein, energy, fat, carbohydrate, sodium, calcium and phosphate levels were measured, in addition to serum prolactin levels and total milk volume. Domperidone did not substantially alter the nutrient composition of the breast milk, while it did increase the volume of milk in the mothers studied.

New Film on Postpartum Depression

Postpartum Support International (PSI) has produced a new short film on the experiences of women coping with a postpartum mood or anxiety disorder such as postpartum depression. “Healthy Mom, Happy Family: Understanding Pregnancy and Postpartum Mood and Anxiety Disorders” features four women who have suffered and recovered from perinatal mood disorders. By sharing their stories the women help educate and reassure new mothers, their family members and friends, and health care professionals that postpartum depression is temporary and treatable. The film also includes up-to-date information from experts in the field who share tips on what women and healthcare providers need to know for the effective identification and treatment of mental illnesses related to childbirth.

A preview of the film is available at http://postpartum.net/Resources/PSI-Educational-DVD.aspx.

Cribs Recalled

The Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) has announced a recall of cribs manufactured by Dorel Asia SRL, of Barbados. Drop side and non-drop side cribs are being recalled because they pose suffocation and strangulation hazards to infants and toddlers. The cribs were sold nationwide in K-Mart, Sears and Wal-Mart stores from January 2005 through December 2009 for between $120 and $700. The crib’s drop side hardware can fail causing the drop side to detach from the crib and creating a space where an infant or toddler can become entrapped and suffocate or strangle. One infant death and 20 injuries to infants as a result of becoming entrapped have been reported. Consumers are advised to stop using the crib immediately until a replacement kit is obtained and installed.

To order a free replacement kit go to http://www.dorel-asia.com/crib-safety-notice.

For a list of cribs involved in the recall, go to the CPSC Web site at http://www.cpsc.gov/cpscpub/prerel/prhtml10/10114.html

Graco Recalls 1.5 Million Strollers

Stroller giant Graco announced a recall today on nearly 1.5 million of its strollers, after the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) found that many styles pose significant risks for fingertip amputations and lacerations. These risks, which mirror those of the Maclaren stroller recall back in November 2009, are caused when the hinges of the stroller canopy are opened and closed. To date, Graco has received seven reports of children injured by the canopy hinge—five fingertip amputations and two lacerations.

Wondering if your stroller style has been recalled? According to the CPSC, the recall involves the Graco Passage, Alano, and Spree strollers, as well as strollers and travel systems with the following model numbers:

6303MYC3 - 7240DNB - 7240DNB2 - 7240MKL2 - 7240MKL3 - 7F02GLM3 - 6320IVY - 6320LAU - 7241DDH2 - 7241DHO3 - 7F04TAY3 - 6330CAP - 6330THR - 6330THR3 - 7255CLP - 7255CLP2 - 7255CRA2 - 7255CRA3 - 7255CSA3 - 7255GPK3 - 7255GRN - 7255GRN2 - 7255JJB3 - 7255ORC2 - 7255WLO2 - 7255WLO3 - 7F07EMA3 - 6F00QIN3 - 6F00RRY3 - 7256CLO2 - 7256SPM2 - 7256SPM3 - 7F08DSW3 - 7F08LAN3 - 6F03GLN3 - 7260BAN - 7260BAN2 - 7260BAN3 - 7260MRA2 - 7260MRA3 - 7260PKR - 7260PKR2 - 7G00DLS3 - 7G00DLS4 - 6G10CSE3 - 7270BIA - 7270BIA2 - 6303MYC - 7255WLO2 - 7255WLO3 - 7F07EMA3 - 6F00QIN3 - 6F00RRY3 - 7256CLO2 - 7256SPM2 - 7256SPM3 - 7F08DSW3 - 7F08LAN3 - 6F03GLN3 - 7260BAN - 7260BAN2 - 7260BAN3 - 7260MRA2 - 7260MRA3 - 7260PKR - 7260PKR2 - 7G00DLS3 - 7G00DLS4 - 6G10CSE3 - 7270BIA - 7270BIA2 - 7G01CRL3

Please note: Graco makes two different kinds of stroller hinges. According to the CPSC, only strollers or travel systems with plastic, jointed hinge mechanisms that have indented canopy positioning notches are included in the recall. Compare the photos below to see whether or not you have an affected hinge.

All recalled stroller styles were sold between October 2004 and December 2009 at nationwide retailers including Walmart, Target, Babies "R" Us, and Sears. If your family currently uses one of these strollers, stop using it immediately, and please spread the word to anyone you know who may be using one.
