Cribs Recalled

The Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) has announced a recall of cribs manufactured by Dorel Asia SRL, of Barbados. Drop side and non-drop side cribs are being recalled because they pose suffocation and strangulation hazards to infants and toddlers. The cribs were sold nationwide in K-Mart, Sears and Wal-Mart stores from January 2005 through December 2009 for between $120 and $700. The crib’s drop side hardware can fail causing the drop side to detach from the crib and creating a space where an infant or toddler can become entrapped and suffocate or strangle. One infant death and 20 injuries to infants as a result of becoming entrapped have been reported. Consumers are advised to stop using the crib immediately until a replacement kit is obtained and installed.

Graco Recalls 1.5 Million Strollers

Stroller giant Graco announced a recall today on nearly 1.5 million of its strollers, after the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) found that many styles pose significant risks for fingertip amputations and lacerations. These risks, which mirror those of the Maclaren stroller recall back in November 2009, are caused when the hinges of the stroller canopy are opened and closed. To date, Graco has received seven reports of children injured by the canopy hinge—five fingertip amputations and two lacerations.

Please note: Graco makes two different kinds of stroller hinges. According to the CPSC, only strollers or travel systems with plastic, jointed hinge mechanisms that have indented canopy positioning notches are included in the recall. Compare the photos below to see whether or not you have an affected hinge.

All recalled stroller styles were sold between October 2004 and December 2009 at nationwide retailers including Walmart, Target, Babies "R" Us, and Sears. If your family currently uses one of these strollers, stop using it immediately, and please spread the word to anyone you know who may be using one.

Teether Recall

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is urging consumers not to purchase or use certain brands of gel-filled teethers. There is a nationwide recall of teethers with the brand names “Nuby,” “Cottontails” and “Playschool,” because the liquid inside of them has been found to contain Bacillus subtilis and Bacillus circulans bacteria in the gel. Although these bacteria generally do not cause illness in adults, infants and children with weakened immune systems can experience stomach pain, vomiting, diarrhea, and uncommonly more serious disease, if the teether becomes punctured and they ingest the liquid gel. Consumers who have teethers included in the recall should immediately stop using them and discard or return them to the place of purchase for a full refund. Mylicon Drops Recalled

The makers of Mylicon have issued a recall for the one-ounce plastic bottles of their non-staining, dye-free gas relief drops due to concerns that some of the bottles could contain pieces of metal. Bottles affected by the recall were sent to stores after October 5th of this year, and are in lots numbered SMF007 and SMF008. To determine if their drops are part of the recall, consumers should look for the numbers printed on the bottom of the box and/or on the lower left side of each sticker on the actual bottle. Bottles of original infant Mylicon gas relief products and half ounce bottles of nonstaining Mylicon are not affected by the recall.
